Fuzzy Coverings

So ever since that sneak peek of the Olsen's line, Elizabeth and James, whowhatwear gave us last week, we've been caught up with the "plume vest" - shown above, top right. The cut and texture is perfect and we're dying to get a hold of something like it. Anyhoo, we felt like showing you guys some good looks which have this great winter to spring transition piece. We love the heaviness that a long dress or skirt paired with a textured vest creates - like in Jenni Kayne's fall '08 look or the girl in all-white photographed by Scott Schuman (both above). Very free-spirited, which we love. You can also take a no-fuss approach to the vest, like Ashley Olsen (corner) or the woman on the far left. Either way, play around and take advantage while we're still experiencing this unusually cold concept of spring.

STYLEDBY

Here is your first glimpse at a behind the scenes photo shoot.  The concept was 70's hippy, green peace loving chick.  The finished pictures will be posted once they are all done, and the concept will be much more evident.

Geraldine Saglio

Geraldine Saglio is part of that team that we seem to be slightly obsessed with, as she is the assistant stylist for Emmanuelle Alt at Vogue Paris.  We love how Geraldine pairs a blazer with just about everything, taking what would be feminine looks and making them a little more tough and less girly.  Her messy, undone hair, is what really makes her look, as it gives her that carefree, I didn't even try this morning, kind of feel.

Bringing Spring Florals from Runway To Realway

So i'm sure by now we're all aware that florals were all over the spring '08 runways, like Balenciaga, Dries Van Noten and Marni above. We gave you guys some good thrift tips on how to find and tailor florals for super cheap a little while back, but now we want to show you how to wear the ultra-feminine print. We put a floral dress on Liz (that we picked up at value village and had tailored) and paired it with a shaggy grey cardigan, dark grey nylons and black patent studded heels. We belted the undone cardigan with a skinny navy belt to pull the look together. Try something like it - stick to neutrals like greys to pair with the busy and colourful florals.

The Look of: Georgina Chapman

Georgina Chapman is one half of the Marchesa team; a designer label that dresses all of Hollywood's starlets.  We love Georgina for her minimalist approach to dressing up.  While her dresses are intricate and beautiful with detail, she carries them off with fuss free hair, very natural make-up, and limited accessories.
Seeing that it prom season is coming for some of our readers, taking a cue from Georgina will be your first step to avoiding that too done look that you WILL regret later.
Check out hazeygirl.blogspot.com for a very true and funny list of prom do's and don'ts.

When the Muse has Daughters

Lou Doillon

Charlotte Gainsbourg

Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg

So the two lovely ladies above are the daughters of English singer Jane Birkin; Charlotte is the daughter of Jane and Serge Gainsbourg - can you see the resemblance? These two girls most definitely know how to take cues from their mom but still remain unique and distinct from each other (sometimes the trouble with sisters *cough). Lou has that underground, messy-but-chic look, whereas Charlotte's style is much more classic, but still edgy. Doillon's look consists of menswear jackets and blazers, stale rouge lipstick and long messy hair - which is always underneath an almost-falling-off-her-head top hat, fedora, conductor's hat or any other chic vintage head-covering she can find. Charlotte sticks to clean lines. Slim jeans or pants with an exaggerated chunky shoe always does the trick. She pairs bohemianesque dresses with hard-edge black heels for a strong contrast and like Poésy (below), wears cowboy-style ankle boots under her jeans for day-to-day chic.

The Beauty in Black

Yes we keep telling you to incorporate some spring colours into your dark wardrobe, but looking at these pictures we remembered how great a black outfit really is.  The best thing to do with black is to layer and make sure your pieces aren't too heavy. Keep make-up neutral unless you're going for a gothic chic look.
We're especially loving the lady on the far left: the body suit, the leather vest, the bomber jacket, and the pink lips-she's working all of it!

The Look Of: Clémence Poésy

So we thought we'd show you this lovely French actress we've discovered while wondering the highly amusing pages of tfs. The one-time Harry Potter star is the epitome of chic and effortless. She's never too trendy and always on point. So instead of searching for different pieces that we've noticed are pattern in her wardrobe in order to show you how to recreate her look, we found this fabulous spread in French Vogue that did exactly that. Yes, we know it's in French but you get the idea. We love how she wears her cowboy boots under her skinny jeans and layers jackets and scarves to create volume on top. A classic noir bag, white button down, white loose tee, oversized sweater and skinny jeans seem to be what's in her wardrobe. There's definitely something to be said for a girl who knows her staples.

Spring Looks-Winter Weather

Apparently it's been spring for a few days now; it seems mother nature missed the memo. In any case, it is as good a time as any to start brightening up your look. Mix in your whites, beiges, and prints, with your favorite scarf, tights, and shoes to achieve this weather appropriate spring look.

we bandaged it

Working around this perfectly worn-in and baggy (but slightly cropped) vintage Chanel T, we created this much-simpler-than-it-looks outfit. Just throw on a pair of opaque tights, your favourite bandage skirt, a loose T and your favourite kicks. We added a thrifted fur pelt, that we got for five dollars in Kensington Market, for a little lux. C'est tout! Enjoy.

Bandage It

Bodycon is here to stay. We are still getting great use out of our bandage skirts. They were great through winter with tights and they'll be great carried from spring into summer with BARE LEGS! We know, it sounds hard to imagine. They've even made their way into some of our favourite Fall '08 shows (if you couldn't tell already), Jenni Kayne and Alexander Wang - shown above. If you dont have one you HAVE to grab this trend, it's much more flattering than you think and always an easy option.

Socks and Sandals...sort of

We're all longing for some nice spring weather so that we can finally debut our great new wardrobes. Wait no longer-work in your lights and whites, open toes and full on sandals, with some winteresque pieces;pair black or grey tights, a light coloured dress, a great black blazer, with some thick strapped sandals for a well balanced transitional season look.

The Look Of: Chloë Sevigny

Chloe Sevigny has always been unique when it comes to fashion.  She has been wearing patterns and prints long before everyone on the spring runways.  Chloe is able to pull off her look by pairing her powerful prints with muted basics.  A floral dress with a dark cardigan and tights, is just one way to recreate her look-or pick up a piece from her line for Opening Ceremony.  We recently saw the line at Holt Renfrew and it looked a lot nicer then some of the pictures we had been seeing online; ultimately it's nothing that you can't find thrifting, but even if it's just for inspiration be sure to check it out.

The Long Skirt

Feeling inspired by Kayne, we styled Liz in a great day-outfit. We found the button down in the men's section of value village and we loved the colours in it! (we were really excited). The skirt is awsome because it's super versatile. Wear it lower on the hips, so it almost brushes the floor, high waisted, tucking in a white or grey tank, or even as a tube dress - as we'll show you later ;). Kayne made the long skirt really exciting for spring, any way your wear it.

Jenni Kayne

At the young and tender age of 19, jenni kayne broke into the high fashion scene when she launched her name sake label at the 2003 los angeles fashion week. In the short five years since, she has managed to make her unconventional dressy-for-day aesthetic one of the most coveted among hollywood it girls, models, and fashion editors alike. We are HUGE fans.

Brighten Up

We'll be the first to admit that our wardrobes don't contain the largest amount of colour in it. But ever since Mary-Kate stepped out in those HOT PINK Giambattista Valli shoes, we've been kind of hooked. If Brights just aren't your thing, try incorporating small shots of it through accessories, make-up or nail polish.

Bohemian Rock - our way

Just like that. We paired a braided headband with victorian-style black boots.

headband: made out of leather string and thrifted purse strap (don't ask) top, denim and boots: urban outfitters

Bohemian Rock

We love the mix of softer and harder pieces to create an image that is so aesthetically pleasing. The placment of bohemian-ish pieces with rock/punk-ish pieces balance each other out really nicely. Pair headresses, headbands and a lil' slouch with some silver zippers, black boots, and black leather.

Thrift Tip:Plaid

Plaid. One of the biggest trends we saw last fall has made its way into spring wardrobes, and all the way into the runway shows for fall 08. Since a plaid piece is not likely to last a lifetime, we recommend that if you want to play up this trend it's best you go vintage. Any vintage or second hand store is going to be filled with tons of plaid especially in the men's and boy's sections. These are the prime territories to find the perfect plaid button up, and if you're really lucky a great plaid blazer. Remember that since you're saving so much buying second hand, it is worth the extra money to go to a tailor to get your piece made to fit you.

A Shade of Grey

Here is yet another outfit that can easily be worn to the office or for night out on the town.  A change of shoes and full stockings can make the look more classic, while the ankle boots and leggings give it some edge. The incorporation of a soft grey is a great way to break away from the standard black, white, and beige, while it also carries the huge fall 07 grey trend into the spring.
On another note, we're really loving  the strategically placed zipper seen here on the skirt, very reminiscent of the bright yellow skirt in the Phillip Lim spring 08 show.

Street Style- For Day and Night

Try this for the office-basic black spice up with a great haircut and killer accessories.  A dress or skirt that hits just above the knee would be more appropriate for a corporate work environment-hike it up to mini for your night out after.

To Work

Need inspiration on what to wear to a job interview or on your first day? Keep it simple, but make sure to still show a little creativity and individuality. Do this with a pop of colour in an otherwise all black or grey tailored pant/skirt/blazer combo. Put the colour in your shoes or even your skirt. Check out 3.1 Phillip Lim's bright yellow high-waisted skirt from his spring '08 collection, shown above, worn with a great blouse and heels. Not into colour? Add an interesting belt or scarf, worn appropriately. We thought these images were great examples of different and easy ways to put together an outfit that will look sophisticated, stylish and smart.

loving wide-legs

Have fun with the 70's inspired wide-leg denim trend by tucking in simple tops and adding cool accessories. Layer your scarves ,like we did here with three different animal prints, to give your look some extra drama and eccentricity.

The Bigger The Better

Right now there is nothing better then the look of wide leg pants and big huge scarves.  Scarves are a great way to add colour, pattern, or texture into your wardrobe without having to invest huge amounts of money. Choose light weight in both items to carry them into your spring wardrobe.

Roitfeld Squared

Fur, leather and fringe! What is there to be said about the editor-in-chief of French Vogue, Carine Roitfeld, and her über-stylish daughter, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld? They know how to look creative and fresh everytime they step out, and that's what we love!

Belt It

You can find GREAT fur thrifting for super cheap (real or faux). This piece we love for its 3/4 sleeves and peter pan collar.
Coat: Value Village, Belt: Club Monaco, Leggings: AA, Sunglasses: Rayban, Converse shoes.

Fur the Day

It seems that spring has forgotten about us-fortunately this mean we can rock our fur (faux or real, whatever you prefer) a little bit longer then usual.  If you're bold enough to wear a full on coat then try to mix it up with some spring looks like a floral shirt or a light coloured dress to prevent your fur from aging you.  If not, try adding fur to your wardrobe with just a small stole.
